Homemade hummus is the best! I have a very similar food processor recipe, except I use a mix of olive oil and water for the liquid. I also throw in any little flavorful extras that are sitting around, like a handful of olives. The current batch includes the last of a jar of marinated artichokes.

Artichoke hummus! That is inspired!

Girrrrrrrrl. Roast. Your. Garlic. Squeeze that gooey, caramelized goodness into your hummus. Totally different than raw garlic. Sweet and much less harsh. Try it! 😁

Thank you for the pointer to Sister District! I am feeling much more optimistic about this election than I was, say, a month ago, but I’m still looking for concrete things to do to tamp down my remaining anxiety.

That’s a great idea. Next time I roast a head of garlic I’ll keep some aside for hummus.

I love garlic powder for certain things too! Veggie chili is one of them. Mmmmm.

I once thought I was all done with the leaving years, and then they came back. And are leaving again. My daughter left about 3 weeks ago to start her life in Europe, after living here the past 2+ years in limbo, hoping her visa application would be approved. It's not as bad as when she left for college, but it's sure an achey sort of thing. Last night I saw Didi (at Laurelhurst Theater), and it's a boy's coming of age story but for me it was also equally about his mother. There is a scene where his older sister is leaving for college, and I was struck by how brutal our ways of launching our children are. Maybe it needs to be this way (the movie offers no easy answers to how to be a family), but damn. It's hard. A good season for good comfort food, for sure.

A hug for you, Rita. Funny, when you mentioned that movie, I immediately thought hm, I’d love to see that, quickly followed by there’s no way I’m going to see that! Sigh. I remember having a similar feeling when I saw the movie Boyhood. At the time, my oldest child was about nine years old, so empty nesting was really far off. But that movie was the first moment I got an inkling the endings of things. It’s such a remarkable movie.

Gah, I loved/hated Boyhood! Knowing what I know now, I'm not sure I could take seeing it again. I think it might punch harder than it originally did. Didi reminded me so much of the years when my son was in 8th/9th grade, and it was such a challenging time. I think it is for all boys (and by extension, their mothers). Watching it made me feel so tender for the boy he was then, and for the mom I was then. As well as the young man he is today. A good kind of painful, but painful all the same. Really feeling it as both my kids are nest-leaving again.

“A good kind of painful.” I feel you! I can handle about a micro drop of that these days. I’ve been afraid to watch Boyhood ever since. it’s such a beautiful piece of art, but…

I guess I have years still to feel all the phases of separation from my children. I hadn't even thought about the emotions of having the last of your children finishing college. I still have a lot to learn! Big hugs.
