I loved this! My word of the year for 2024 is Rhythm. There's going to be a lot of transition for me and my family this year, and a lot of old rhythms are going to be disrupted and I'll need to develop new ones.

This is less about improvement than it is about alignment. = This is a wonderful way to think about a new year!

Seriously incredible fiction books I read last year: Overstory by Richard Powers (I'll never look at trees the same again) and Shantaram (set in India, based on a true story by a man who deeply loves India -- an utter page turner)

Like Sara, my 2024 word of the year is Rhythm. 2023 was full of interruptions and disruptions, as well as emergency travel to the US in November, and I was never able to get into any sort of rhythm. I was either fundamentally bored, or too busy and pulled in multiple directions, with no time for reflection. I spent 16 cumulative weeks of the year away from home, so finding rhythms of movement and eating well were impossible, and finding time to do things I love was also really hard because I spent so much time trying to catch up. This year, I only have one big trip planned, and it's only 2 weeks in June-July. I'm coming to grips with my work schedule (part time pool lifeguard) and volunteer commitments, and trying to find stretches of time for rest and reflection and doing more baking and movement that I enjoy. It's also my son's last year of high school, so there will be disruptions with that, and hopefully the rhythms I am building will help our whole family ride the upcoming changes in our family life. I'm optimistic.

My first read, and comment. Really aligned well with Rhythm, thank you. On good reads, just finished Death's End by Liu Cixin - meanders a bit - but excellent. Then my daughter gave me Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler - oldy but a goody.

Your sentiments around rhythms are far more elegant than my declared 2024 resolution theme of "Less Bullshit," which I'm hoping will serve as a sort of success umbrella for lots of positive shifts. But I think we're attempting something similar. More of what's good, more of what works. Less of what doesn't support the good. I've still got one kid at home for a couple more weeks, so I'm definitely leaning into the things we like doing together and not worrying too much about goals until she's settled back at school. More baking, more evenings on the couch watching TV together. Work will wait. Which, now that I think of it, fits perfectly into my "Less Bullshit" strategy. Score! Happy New Year to you. Thanks, as always, for all the thought provoking words and inspiration. 💙

I heard you on Edit Your Life, and mistakenly thought that this newsletter was caregiving / parent oriented...signed right up though I don’t have kids. Sometimes things happen for a reason...I have a young adult Niece that has recently joined our life, she is like a daughter. Enjoying your writing -
