Community + civil conversations

A recording from Asha Dornfest's and Christine Koh's live video

Well THAT was fun! In case you missed it,

and I had our first go at live video on Substack. We riffed on the topics of community and civil conversations based on posts we published in our respective newsletters the same week:

Parent of Adults
"Can we just *not* talk about politics?"
I wrote the original version of this piece about a year before the 2024 US election so readers knew what to expect when it came to political talk at Parent of Adults…

Substack Live video was wonderful for a few reasons:

  • As you may know, Christine and I co-hosted the Edit Your Life podcast for five years (2016-2021). Podcasting together gave us a regular opportunity to clarify our thoughts through conversation. I LOVED being able to do that again here with Christine.

  • It was refreshing to inject spontaneity into newsletter writing. Writing takes time and iteration. Our Substack Live video was just… getting to talk to a friend. (Although it’s humbling bordering on cringey to read the transcript. I had no idea I said “you know” so often. 😳)

  • It was amazing to see your names pop onto the screen as you joined us live! Being in the same “place” at the same time felt really special.

  • It was the WORLD PREMIERE of me wearing glasses! Yep, that’s my first pair of prescription glasses.

Whether you were able to attend live or you’re watching the recording now, thanks for hanging out with us on our maiden voyage.

I’d love hear your thoughts about what we talked about. I’d also like to know what you think about live video. I’m not usually a video watcher, but I enjoy interacting with my favorite newsletter writers in person and in real time. Not in a fangirl-y way, more because it adds dimension to our connection as humans without being too intimate like a Zoom call would be to me. Thoughts?
